Water can be both freeing and scary. Its beauty has the ability to instil calm, while it's touch feel healing. People have been painting and writing about water since they could write and create.
For me it is a source of both peace and terror in a beautiful balance of opposites. This theme has been a source of fascination for me since coming across an exhibition by Maggi Hambling in Cambridge's FitzWilliam Museum many years ago. Her paintings of waves were vast and completely surrounded your view in a encapsulating experience. I was surprised at the emotion they stirred in me. Over a decade later and I still have postcards of these paintings hung in my studio.
It seems then no surprise to me when I discovered this medium that this has become one of my most favourite themes to get lost in while painting. It's also a favourite for my customers.
